THE ALLIANCE BRIEF

THE CASE AGAINST AA AND THE "SYSTEM"

Dear Mr. and Ms. America,

For decades, the American people have been led to believe that traditional addiction treatment—especially the 12-step model developed by Bill Wilson and widely implemented through Alcoholics Anonymous—is the only reliable path to recovery. This approach dominates the vast majority of treatment centers and is deeply embedded in medical, legal, and social systems, often without meaningful scrutiny or challenge.

Yet despite over $34 billion spent in 2024 alone, and more than $1.6 trillion invested since 1971, the results tell a different story. Success rates remain as low as 8 to 10 percent- in some research the success rate falls below 5 percent, while substance abuse continues to rise. The system, as it stands, continues to rely on outdated, one-size-fits-all methods that fail the majority of those seeking help.

The current treatment model and its obsession with Alcoholics Anonymous places overwhelming responsibility on individuals while largely avoiding accountability at the systemic level. It promotes the belief that people struggling with addiction are powerless, permanently flawed, and incapable of independent recovery. This narrative often leads to cycles of dependence, relapse, and diminished self-worth rather than long-term empowerment and success.

The widespread reliance on Alcoholics Anonymous has reinforced a rigid framework that prioritizes lifelong dependence on group ideology over personal autonomy and real-world functionality. Its influence remains largely unchecked, operating without the level of transparency, regulation, or scientific validation expected of other healthcare-related systems.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans continue to cycle through treatment programs that do not equip them with the practical tools needed to build stable, independent lives. The focus remains on conformity rather than individuality, on repetition rather than innovation.

There is a growing need for a new direction—one that embraces evidence-based practices, modern clinical approaches, and personalized care. A system that prioritizes education, life skills, emotional development, and critical thinking. A system that prepares individuals not just to avoid substances, but to live productive, self-directed lives.

The time has come to question the status quo, demand accountability, and move toward a more effective and humane approach to addiction treatment. The American people deserve solutions that evolve with the times and truly serve those in need.

Respectfully,
Juan A. Arroyo (Johny Brooklyn)
